Prologue

Probably everyone knows it, that one moment ... the moment when you realize you are missing something. Whether it's the old school where you had to stutter and give a presentation or two in front of the whole class, or the favorite café just around the corner where you once spent long, sunny afternoons with your best friend, talking about men's stories, work, clothes and everything else that moved you. Or even those old friends whose photo you just got your hands on due to an overdue cleanup, but have no idea where in the world they are now. You wonder what their lives have been like, whether they've started families or maybe even left the country to find happiness. One measures the pranks, the communal anxiety before upcoming exams, and most especially the hours spent together after school.

It feels like a tingling in the hands, triggered by the mere sight of the photo. It's similar when driving past the old walls where milestones were once laid. Or former favorite places that are now so run down that it hurts your heart to see them that way. It jogs old memories in us, tosses them aloft and swirls them around in the air. Slowly and tenaciously, regret finally spreads and we feel that something is missing. Longing would already be too much to say at this point. It is rather a kind of preliminary stage, but at the end of the staircase it really goes there. It begins rather inconspicuously, perhaps even only with the trivial remark of a custom or a feeling that was previously tangible and is now inaccessible.

But that's the way it often is in life, for the most part we don't realize we're missing something until it's gone. Certainly, we take too much for granted and perhaps some things would not disappear if we did not. Be it an appreciation of our partner, close relatives, friends or, to put it in general terms, of the people around us. With the constant urge to want to get ahead, it is certainly helpful to take a look back to see what we have already achieved. We should also learn to respect these things. Starting with the roof over our heads and ending with ordinary everyday rituals like having coffee in the morning.

Sometimes, however, we are so convinced that we have to make a cut that nothing and no one can dissuade us. Not even the purest, most honest and well-intentioned words or the most plausible reasoning. We have to put our heads through the wall for ourselves. But at some point it does happen that one longs for and consumes the frowned upon old ways. Moreover, there are the memories that seem to buzz mercilessly through the air.
