TRAVEL NOTEBOOK
Barcelona

There are several
tourist bus routes
in Barcelona so you
don’t miss a thing.

La Rambla
Plaça de Catalunya is the
heart of Barcelona.
La Rambla goes from plaça de Catalunya
to the sea. It is an ancient covered
torrent with fountain of Canaletes at the
top. The tradition says that all those who
drink from it will return to Barcelona.
The gothic
church of Santa
Maria del Pi,
with its gigantic
rose window,
is further
down
La Rambla.
And, opposite, La Boqueria
Market , always full of colour
and life. And its famous
Pinotxo bar.
El Gran Teatre del
Liceu, Barcelona’s
opera house, also
overlooks La Rambla.
A little further down, plaça Reial is an
ideal place to rest. The lampposts were
designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí.
La Rambla ends at the Columbus monument.
The statue points in the direction opposite to
America. I’ve never understood why.
And it is still possible to walk a little further,
over the sea. A footbridge crosses the harbour
to the Maremagnum shopping centre.
The Gothic
Quarter
It took a century
and a half to build
the Cathedral. It is
a good starting
point to explore
the Gothic Quarter.
There are Roman
walls, Romanesque
churches, gothic
palaces, and
this bridge over
carrer del Bisbe,
from 1928.
Plaça de Sant Felip Neri has
its rewards: it is a place of
peace. And the walls bear
the wounds of history.
Jews used to live
in carrer del Call.
During Corpus Christi,
the “ou com balla”
(dancing egg) is held in
several gothic courtyards.
The Royal Palace and
Santa Àgata Chapel, from
the 14th century, enclose
plaça del Rei.
A house at number
10 carrer del Paradís
contains four Roman columns
from the Temple of August dating
back to the 1st century.
After more than two centuries, in 1574, the last great
gothic church in Barcelona, devoted to saints Justus
and Pastor, was completed.
The walk can end at the Catalan
Art Nouveau bar Els Quatre Gats.
Pablo Picasso had his first
solo exhibition there.
A large number of
Catalan Art Nouveau
artists decorated
the Fonda España.
El Raval
Plaça dels Àngels is shared
by the Barcelona Contemporary
