On 21st september 2013, four masked gunmen attacked the westgate shopping mall, an upscale mall in Nairobi kenya. The extremist islamic group Alshabaab claimed responsibility for the incident. A lot of us were stuck in that situation for hours. Some died, some left crippled to date, some survived and some left traumatized.

The 'elephant' in the room.

Our ancestors did not comb our hair with fish bones when they said, ‘no one knows the story of tomorrows dawn'.

Today, the year 2023, as I sit in my front yard on my manual wheelchair looking up to the sky and wondering how beautiful-painful my life has been. As I wiped tears rolling down my cheeks, I remembered the events that occurred 10 years ago and are still as fresh as daisy in my mind.

We had a few errands to run in the wetlands area, and our final errand brought us to the Westgate shopping mall. we couldn't decide whether we wanted to park in the rooftop or on the basement. The sun was hot and my husband and I, had an issue to get into a hot car. we ended up parking in the basement. I had the car parking ticket in my pocket dated September 21st 2013.

The day started as the most ordinary day of the week, a beautiful Saturday, hot sun, traffic and the joyful mood was written in everyone’s face.

We got into the Nakumatt supermarket. Nakumatt, from outside, looked like a thriving supermarket. Its tagline, 'you need it, we’ve got it', assured shoppers that they would get a variety of products in an idyllic environment, all under one roof'. It was also a place where suppliers burnt their fingers, money was siphoned offshore and employees stole 1 million Kenya shillings every day. that was Nakumatts elephant in the room and interestingly, the elephant was its logo. The elephant died.
