Beschreibung

This book is the English version of the original volume, Albert Einstein in der Schweiz. It is not a direct translation, but a parallel text for English speakers, although some of the references and plaques remain in German. Einstein was born in Ulm in Germany, but lived a lot of his life in Switzerland where he went to school and university, married and had two sons. As well as in Zurich, Einstein lived in Bern, where he worked in the Patent Office, he also spent time in Aarau, Winterthur and Schaffhausen. It was in Switzerland that he developed his Special Theory of Relativity. As a result, the Swiss have taken the physics genius to their hearts, and there are many commemorative plaques, street and square names and even two museums, that have been named after him since his death.

There is information about his family – his wife and son Eduard – during their time in Zurich. You can see the results of Swiss pride in his life and achievements in the museums dedicated to him, the many memorial plaques and streets which were named or renamed in his honour.

Biography

Albert Einstein, destined to become one of the most influential physicists of the 19th and 20th centuries, was born in the German city of Ulm, on the River Danube, on 14thMarch 1879. His parents, Hermann and Pauline Einstein, were German Jews. Unfortunately, the house in which this great genius was born, at 20 Bahnhofstrasse, was destroyd by bombing in The Second World War, so it cannot be visited today, even on the outside.

In 1880, when Einstein was only one year old, Hermann Einstein moved his family to Munich, where he started a business with his brother Jakob, making items of electrical equipment. It was in Munich that year that Albert’s sister, Maria (Maja), was born.

In 1885 Albert Einstein started at St Peter’s School in Munich, before progressing at the age of six to the Luitpold Gymnasium, where he was until 1894. At that time the brothers’ factory in Munich was not doing well, and they decided to move it to Milan, Italy. Albert remained behind to finish his schooling at the gymnasium, living at this time with a relative. In 1895 Albert moved to be with his parents in Italy, where he spent his time preparing for the entrance test at the Polytechnic School in Zürich, Switzerland.

At that point there was a hiatus in Eintein’s career, for the unthinkable happened: one of the greatest brains in Europe over two centuries, failed the entrance exam for the Polytechnic! It was his French and History, rather than Mathematics or Science that let him down.
