Zürich: Photo Travel Guide

Preface

Zürich is an important economic and cultural centre, and home to 400,000 people. The largest city in Switzerland has an attractive position alongside the north of Lake Zürich, and on both shores of the River Limmat that flows out of the lake in a north-westerly direction. This is a student city, with both Zürich University, the biggest in Switzerland, and ETH, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

This photo guide shows the most important sights of the city, along with some of its festivals. Each picture is accompanied by a short commentary, including how to get to the location.

Information about accommodation can be found at the main city Tourist Office, which is in the big hall of Zürich’s Railway Station.

All pictures in this guide were taken by the author.

Please note: for this English language edition of Zürich, Photo Travel Guide I have used the English for German words like quai (quay), münster (minster or cathedral) and brücke (bridge) where possible to make it easier for the reader; the German place names will be found in the City Plan.

Zürich’s churches

The view of the city from from Quaibrücke (Quay Bridge): on the left bank is Bauschänzli square and public park. This was once part of the city’s defensive wall; now it houses a restaurant and beer garden. Beyond, the church nearer the camera is the Fraumünster (‘Women’s Cathedral‘); its blue-green slender spire is one of the main landmarks of the city. Behind it, with a slightly shorter spire, is the tower of St Peter’s Church; and on the opposite bank you see the twin towers of the Grossmünster church.

The View from Quaibrücke

Looking right from Quay Bridge, the church with the twin towers is the Grossmünster. Behind the fir tree you can just see the Wasserkirche (Water Church).

The Stadthaus

The building on the left of the picture is the Stadthaus (Town House).

Next to it is the green spire of the Fraumünster, and beyond Münster Bridge is the church of St Peter with its clock tower.

Zürich from Münster Bridge

The view of Zürich from Münster Bridge over the River Limmat.

To the left you see the tower of St Peter’s Church. Straight ahead is Rathaus Bridge, with the Rathaus and Limmatquai to the right.

The River Limmat

A view of the River Limmat and Limmatquai from Grossmünster Square, with Münster Bridge to the left and the Fraumünster beyond.

The building to the right of the Fraumünster is the Zunfthaus zur Meisen (Guildhall), built in 1757, which now houses a porcelain museum.

St Peter’s Church tower is to the right of the picture.
