Instead of admiring the snowy winter landscape through a slightly fogged window while listening to the fire crackling in the fireplace, my Christmas trip becomes a harsh struggle for survival. I have no idea where I am, stumbling through the Colorado wilderness completely exhausted as the sun is already setting. Barring a miracle, I don't know how I'm supposed to make it through the night. When I meet an alien with red skin who is more than eight feet tall, I am sure that I must be hallucinating and about to freeze to death... Dark sci-fi romance with a Christmas theme. Over the top and utterly ridiculous. Contains holiday lights, candy canes, and a happy ending in front of a fireplace.

"You wanted to see me?" I hugged my tablet tightly to my chest and clutched the strap of my backpack with my other hand.
My heart was beating a mile a minute, and I probably already had huge sweat stains in my armpits because I had a good guess what Professor Darden wanted from me. My grades were impeccable, and my seminar papers were so good that they served as models for other students—that couldn't be why he'd called me in, so the only options left were unpleasant ones. It was widely known that Professor Darden could not keep his hands to himself.
"Oh yes, Harriet. Why don't we go to my office? We won't be disturbed there." He smiled at me. It was probably meant to seem nice and inviting, but I only saw the calculating glint in his eyes.
How do I get out of this situation? Should I just turn around and run away?
I could hardly do that, especially since I didn't know for sure what he wanted from me. It was possible I'd completely misjudged the situation, and he did not want to get... into my panties.
I was on a scholarship, and if he failed me out of spite, I could kiss my degree goodbye. Not that I cared—but my parents would freak out. If I had a choice, I would've studied something to do with art, but they'd insisted on a solid, tangible science degree that they could brag about to their friends. So I studied mathematics and hated every second of it.
As I followed Professor Darden out of the room, we passed Michelle. We had two other classes together, and the pitying look she gave me said it all. I hadn't just imagined that Professor Darden always looked at me a little too long, and the rumors were all true. Fuck.
Okay, I needed a plan. I would follow him into his office and listen to what he had to say. But I would not move more than four inches away from the door and would flee as soon as he said something inappropriate.
I noticed for the first time that there was actually soft music playing in the elevators because the building was quiet since winter break would start the day after tomorrow. My parents were visiting their parents in Korea for the holidays, and I planned to stay on campus to study. At that moment, I deeply regretted my decision.
Professor Darden awkwardly unlocked the door to his office, and my heart sank even further.
It reeked of frying fat and vegetables, and the smell was coming from the plate that was sitting in the middle of his desk.
With a big grin, Professor Darden turned to me. "I bet your mom made that for breakfast a lot, right? I've been trying to learn more about your culture, Harriet."
I had stopped so as not to stray too far from the exit and squinted at the leftovers. That had undoubtedly been jianbing. "My culture?"
"China," he explained with an indulgence in his voice, as if he were talking to a five-year-old.
"Aside from the fact that I was born in Denver, my parents are not Chinese; they are Korean."
My disgust grew as I pictured exactly what questions had just arisen in his mind: So what! What is the difference?
I had a few curse words on the tip of my tongue that would have had my mother reaching for her pearl necklace.
"But you guys eat that too?"
"Of course. However, you probably also eat sushi and pizza, although you clearly aren't Japanese or Italian."
Professor Darden put away his worn leather bag and sat down in his chair. "Won't you have a seat?"
"Actually, I'd like to know what this is about. I still have to go to the library and verify some sources before it closes." Although my pulse was racing and I was having a hard time breathing calmly, I was proud that I didn't lose control of the conversation.
The professor sighed. "That's exactly the problem. Your dismissive attitude makes me question your motivation. Aren't you going to take off your jacket? It's warm in here."
"My motivation?"
"Your performance has been slipping, and your work seems like you are unfocused. Since I saw you were staying over the holidays, I thought we could use the time for me to give you some help."
I knew he was talking absolute nonsense. My performance was consistently outstanding. He wanted me to come to his office on days when there was no one else around so he could blackmail me into having sex with him. How could I get out of this?
"Unfortunately, I won't be here at all over the holidays."
"No?" He raised an eyebrow. "Where will you be, then? With your... boyfriend?"
"I'm going away with girlfriends."
"With the redhead?"
I froze. Obviously, he had been spying on me, or he could hardly have known about Taylor. The last time she had visited me on campus was two years ago; we usually met at her place since she was the only one of my best friends who had her own apartment.
"I hardly think a stripper is appropriate company for you," he chided.
Of course. Taylor sometimes tagged me in her Instagram posts, and even though my profile was private, he had apparently put two and two together.
Just as I was thinking of the best way to leave, there was a short knock on the door, and the dean's assistant came in. "Daniel, can you quickly sign the card for Mrs. Milbert? She's retiring after all. Oh, sorry, I didn't know you were busy."
"No problem." I raised my hand defensively and was already retreating. "I was just leaving anyway."
Before Professor Darden could protest, I literally ran out of the room.
I had to urgently and very quickly persuade my girlfriends to go away with me for Christmas—or I was screwed.
Sullenly, I squatted on the fallen tree trunk and stared at the snow. My mood was so bad that I almost expected the snow to melt under my pissed-off stare.
I just didn't know what I was supposed to do on this ah'tze planet—even more so in this deserted corner of it, where we were guaranteed to have as little fun as possible. What did I care about that our government had intercepted information that the bloodthirsty Horgerians were planning to exterminate humanity on Earth! Though they would most likely spare the female half as human women made excellent sex slaves. At least that's what I had heard, and I had seen only a few specimens so far—and none of them up close—so I had no experience with them myself.
I didn't think that we Tedolerans should interfere, but nobody listened to me. And in my team, I seemed to be in the minority with that opinion. Dashar was absolutely thrilled with this pathetic planet, and the kitsch humans used to celebrate their holidays. And Voxen was always on Dashar's side—in this case, probably because he was hoping to sooner or later sample human pussy. He had already tried to get me interested in visiting the nearest town, not understanding that we were the only four strangers on the entire planet. The nearest city was full of humans—it wasn't an interstellar space station where several dozen alien races coexisted more or less peacefully. If we showed ourselves to humans, it would provoke pure chaos. We were big, and our skin was not necessarily the best camouflage. The only advantage to the humans was that they didn't know what Tedolerans normally looked like: black-haired with red skin. My team and I had been sent on this mission because we had never really belonged—we stood out with our white hair, and no one would miss us.
It was possible that Copid was on my side, but since he didn't talk much, I could only guess what was going on inside his head.
With the toe of my shoe, I kicked the light powdery snow, which glittered as it dispersed in the air and fell back to the ground.
