Beschreibung

A comedy in two acts in the style of the Marquis de Sade.
"The Disadvantages of Lack of Manners is about how people who appear to be very honorable and moral can harbor great immorality in their souls without even realizing it.
An old man's attempt to seduce a young girl he has his eyes on is an event that has happened all over the world at every moment in history. For the first time, Bedrettin brings this seduction to the theater stage in the way it deserves.
The second part of the book contains the text of the play "The Discussion between an Atheist and a Priest", which is adapted from the first chapter "Preamble" of Bedrettin Simsek's published work "The New Divine Comedy".

The discussion between an atheist and a priest

About "The New Divine Comedy" Available from all online booksellers

Bedrettin Simsek was a promising writer when his first two books were published by major Turkish publishers in 1996 and 1997. His combination of philosophy, humor, and literature set him apart from other writers, and he stood out for his skeptical attitude toward religion. When his third book "The New Divine Comedy" was published in 1998 under the title "The Discussion between an Atheist and a Priest" by one of the leading publishing houses in Turkey, , he was sued over complaints and both he and the publisher were sentenced to prison terms for insulting religious values. This sentence was suspended on the condition that he would not commit the same offense again and was noted in his record. His conviction made Bedrettin a criminal forever. All publishing houses closed their doors to him; he was excluded from the literary world. His later works were always rejected by publishers, some for fear of punishment, others for fear of the reader reaction.

The Disadvantages of Lack of Manners

Characters:

The man , a sixty year old millionaire, rich as well as religious and conservative, who is looking for a very young, virgin girl to marry.

The girl, nineteen years old, very poor, beautiful, an orphan.

The play takes place in a bedroom. There are no props on the stage except a bed.

Act 1

The girl enters the stage first. The man follows her. They walk to the bed in the center of the stage.

MAN – I can't thank you enough for this meeting.

GIRL – Wasn't this meeting one of your conditions?

MAN – Yes, but I had little hope that it would be accepted.

GIRL – You told my father that you had something very important to tell me. I am still waiting for you to explain this important thing.

MAN – All right. I want to marry you.

GIRL – I know.

MAN – But I haven't decided yet. That's why I think this meeting is important. So the parties understand each other. Nothing surprises them on the first night.

GIRL – What do you mean, surprise?

MAN – Look, honey. They may have told you that I am only asking for the virginity of the girl I am going to marry as a dowry. Do you understand me?

GIRL – Oh, sir, did you have any doubts? You should have sensed this from my behavior and demeanor until today..

MAN – Then forgive me for asking. For I could not have received such information from your father.

GIRL – ( proudly) You could have guessed.

MAN – Anyway, if you knew me, you would forgive my curiosity. For my true wealth is my honor. That's why I'm looking for honor in the girl I'm going to marry, so that our fortunes will be equal.

GIRL – Look, I am my father's only daughter. I lost my mother many years ago. I live with my father in a small house, and we barely survive on his pension. We are a poor family, sir. Do you know what my father said to me when you asked about me? There were many suitors for me before. But he turned them all down because he didn't like their morals. So, sir, we are looking for honesty, not wealth. So you don't need to worry.

MAN – Then it's a pleasure for me. I hope the age difference will not be a problem?

GIRL – No, why should it be?

MAN – But you are a twenty-year-old little thing. I'm well over fifty.

GIRL – (surprised) Is that so? You are younger than I thought.

MAN – ( laughs) I look seventy, don't I? I am only fifty-five.

GIRL – ( in serious way) I don't care how old you are as long as you're honest.

MAN – How nice to hear that from a young and beautiful lady. Then I will be honest with you and admit that I am sixty years old.

GIRL – I'd rather have an honest man of eighty than a young, treacherous one.

MAN – How nice! With these words of yours, I am now twenty years younger.
